Monday 3rd June19 To Limerick
In the morning it was dry. but with rain forecast (again!!). Fred took a couple of laps round the car park of the hotel to test out his makeshift footrest. He decided the bike was rideable, but neither the bike or Fred were ready for the twisty coast road of the Wild Atlantic Way; so as it had started to rain we decided to take the direct route via the N20 straight to Limerick. We were actually very lucky that the bike was not more badly damaged otherwise it would have been the end of Fred’s trip, or I’d have to find room for him and his luggage on the back of my bike…not sure even my GS could cope with that!!!
The journey was largely uneventful, only interrupted by a coffee stop and another to adjust the mole grip footrest. It was raining most of the way and when we arrived at our city centre hotel. It continued to rain all the time we were there, so apart from a short walk to check out a couple of pubs we stayed and ate in the hotel. I was actually happy to have an early night after last night’s Bikefest head banging 🙂
Tuesday 4th June19 To Roundstone
It was raining as we loaded the bikes and set off for the picturesque village of Roundstone, Co Galway, right on the Wild Atlantic Way coast road. We decided to take the shortest route to Galway as it was raining heavily; there was a long stretch of Motorway during which we all got drenched and it was cold 9degs C. Finally we got off the Mway and stopped for coffee and petrol. We had had a full fried breakfast a couple of hours ago, but this was an opportunity for Kevin to have yet another meal (soup & pasta); seems he eats probably 4 times between breakfast and dinner 🙂 ” You gotta eat to maintain a body like mine” to quote Kev.
We were certainly wet, gloves were completely soaked. Fred came up with the answer!!
We set off again heading for Galway city and found a pub for lunch; chance for us to dry out a bit and Kev to have another meal 🙂 From Galway there was really no option but to follow the Wild Atlantic Way to Roundstone; thankfully the rain had eased off and parts of the road we completely dry. It was a really nice road for a long stretch, so time for a bit of blast 🙂 Then it started raining again..well we are right of the Atlantic coast and first to get whatever weather is blowing in.
We arrived at Rounstone, which is basically one street with a small harbour and about 5 pubs. We found our B&B, The Island View. The door was locked and a note left saying “Back at 3pm”, so we retired to the pub next door for a shot of Jamesons to warm us up.
We checked in and were shown up to our very comfortable rooms and arranged to meet in the pub at 7pm; I managed to grab the room with the sea view!
That night we ate in O’Dowds pub 100yds down the road; had a very nice Scampi & Fish curry. The beer was a very tasty brew called Galway Hooker..good name 🙂 On our way back to the hotel we stopped off at another one of the 5 pubs for a Jamesons nightcap and had a nice chat and laughs with the locals. The weather might be crap in Ireland but the people are friendly and the beer is good!
Wednesday 5th June19 To Sligo
The weather forecast suggested that the morning would be dry, which is just as well as we will be following the Wild Atlantic Way for quiet a long distance; we would then catch heavy rain as we got close to Sligo, our stop for the night.
The road was good; nice and winding with great views of the coast. Fred was coping well and was enjoying himself as much as he could on his patched up bike. The route then took us through the Connemara National Park which was very picturesque and pretty with the wild purple Rhododendrons in bloom.
As we got nearer to Sligo the road was mainly straight and close to the Atlantic, the wind was blowing hard as we stopped to take a look at the surf from a vantage point up on the cliffs. Check this video https://youtu.be/qOp21chhLLw sorry about the wind noise.
We stopped for coffee about 20 miles outside Sligo, the rain started to fall heavily again 🙁 We made it the last few miles arriving at the hotel in the centre wet again. It was really cold, wet and windy so we ate in the hotel. Reception told us that there were several pubs in town with live music that night, all started at 9:30 or later. The best one was a few hundred yds walk in the cold and rain. Fred and I chickened out while firefighter and sailor Kevin went out in just his T-shirt,,you’re my hero Kev 🙂
It was nearly midnight when I heard the phone ringing in Fred & Kev’s room next door; Fred probably had his earplugs in and Kev was still out, so no one answered. Then my phone went; it was reception calling to say that one of our bikes had a light left on and they were concerned it would drain the battery..it had to be Fred’s bike!! I sent Kev a WhatsApp to see if he could check it out on his way back and went to sleep.
Sligo is as far North as we go on the Wild Atlantic Way, tomorrow we ride to Dublin to catch our ferry back to Wales; heavy rain is forecast for the morning! Will we have a flat battery in the morning? If so how will we handle it? Stay tuned..still lots to tell 🙂 The Adventure is not over yet!!! 🙂
