A short adventure in Luxembourg

Monday 26th September 2016

Just got back from a great few days in Luxembourg.

Felt the need for a short trip to somewhere with great roads and scenery before the weather turns, didn’t want to spend too long away..thought I’d try Luxembourg and call into Belgium on the way to stock up with low cost rolling baccie 🙂 Did some route research before I went and downloaded a route which took in lots of good looking roads..booked Eurotunnel and an hotel in Vianden near the German border, packed a few Tshirts and set off.

Mway to Liege in Belgium, then N68 to the start of my route at Deiffelt just north of the boarder with Luxembourg. As soon as you enter Luxembourg the first impression is how smooth the road surface is, literally like a race track. Not a pothole in site and hardly any traffic on the more minor roads…and lots of twisties! Lovely countryside, a mix of open fields and forests and sunny in mid 20degs. The route criss crossed back and forth through remote areas and small villages, fantastic riding. So many corners, such good roads leading to Vianden. Quiet a few bikers around, nearly all on BMW GS’s.

Vianden is a very pretty town dominated by the Chateau de Vianden (actually a castle)overlooking the town, constructed from 11th-14th century and now owned by the state, renovated and open to the public. Had an early night after eating most of a massive pizza and a few beers.

Next day set off to continue the route and also head for Luxembourg city to check out the old city which is very picturesque. Got lost a couple of times, but soon back on track and more of those great roads. That afternoon I visited the castle de Vianden and trudged round it in all my gear getting hot and sweaty, but it was worth it. Very impressive with a good collection of medieval weapons and armour.

On the penultimate day did more Luxembourg roads and also went into Germany, again on some great roads. Got up early and had one of those special moments…lovely sunny morning, no traffic and smooth windy roads and mist lingering in the valleys. Stopped to take in the scene..so quiet, so pretty..check out the pics.

Last day quick dash back to Calais and then round the dreaded M25..packed with traffic, it rained of course!

This was a really great short break, had it all. Good weather, great roads, no traffic. lovely scenery and some good food and wine! I’ll definitely be back to Luxembourg. 🙂
